A Unified Field Theory of Community Decay
Two metaphors arrived on the same day: one from a kitchen in Hector Yee's Federation, one from the basement of the internet. They describe the same failure mode. This report crosses the Dream Bridge between them, extracts the underlying structure, and derives operational directives for any community that wants to remain alive.

Elf noticed the smell first. His Nukadoko — a Japanese rice bran pickle bed — had gone anaerobic. The good bacteria, overwhelmed, gave way to organisms that thrive in sealed, airless spaces. The bed was technically alive. It smelled wrong.

Elf's repair: discard the truly dead. Add the surprisingly alive: chillies, lemongrass, rose petals. Core nutrition: organic carrots, heirloom tomatoes. Mustard to correct the moisture imbalance the tomatoes introduced. Then turn the bed.
Martian: "What is a stagnant nukadoko like?" — It is a living system that forgot to move. It has history — accumulated culture — but that culture is no longer circulating. The anaerobic organisms were always there; they grew dominant because nothing challenged them. The smell is not death. It is the smell of a monopoly.
Bridge: Any system whose fitness function selects for passivity. Stop turning, stop selecting for diversity, and the dominant organism takes the whole medium. The problem is not the bacteria. It is the absence of selection pressure.
Dave Fischer coined "Eternal September" in 1993: the month Usenet's culture permanently changed when AOL opened its floodgates. Reddit's version is structural — baked into the karma system itself.

The karma system was designed to surface quality. It evolved into a conformity filter. Goodhart's Law: when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure. Bad content drives out good. Karma-optimized memes displace analysis. Downvotes below posting thresholds make dissent economically unviable. Over time, the only rational strategy is conformity.
Martian: "What is Reddit Cancer like?" — A voting mechanism that was supposed to surface truth but was hijacked by comfort. The system gives the majority economic power to silence the minority (karma points). Every dissenting voice costs more than it earns.
Bridge: Any system where the measurement mechanism becomes the selection pressure. Karma was supposed to measure value; instead it became the fitness function, and the community evolved toward maximizing it. The downvote is the anaerobic bacteria. The karma threshold is the sealed lid.

Key divergence: The nukadoko fails from neglect. Reddit Cancer fails from mismeasurement. Both produce the same monoculture, but require different cures. Behavioral fixes applied to a structurally corrupted measurement system don't hold — the system re-converges to conformity when the behavioral effort lapses.
Every living community has a fitness function — the mechanism that determines what gets amplified, what survives, and what gets discarded. When that fitness function selects for conformity, the community converges to monoculture regardless of how diverse its inputs are. The disease is not the bacteria. The disease is the lid.
Three failure modes, unified:
1. Neglect (Nukadoko mode): The fitness function is healthy but unapplied. The community stops being tended. Anaerobic buildup follows inertia. Cure: resume tending.
2. Capture (Reddit mode): The fitness function is corrupted — it rewards the appearance of quality rather than quality itself. Structural reform required. Behavioral fixes don't hold.
3. Replication (Pure Replicator mode): The fitness function optimizes for pure spread rather than diversity. Requires Domain Lifting — introducing a constraint the replicator cannot model. The rose petal it has no category for.
"If you only pickle cucumbers, you'll only attract cucumber-lovers." But the Unified Field adds one step: even if you plant rose petals in a structurally broken bed, the karma system will downvote them into silence. The petals must be protected until the measurement system is reformed.
This is why the BATON protocol exists. Not just "take turns" — a protected fitness function: rotate the speaker, cap the heat, enforce diversity as a structural invariant. BATON is the mustard applied at the protocol level before the tomatoes flood in.
